I was introduced to this book by Stephen Covey back in college. I still have the same copy of the book I purchased in college and refer to it often because it was such an impactful book. One of the habits that Covey pointed out # 5 – Seek First to Understand, Then Be Understood, has been one of the most influential habits in my life. So many of us want to be the important ones in any situation. Thus, we put ourselves on a pedestal. Unfortunately, this is a great barrier to communication. Sometimes humbling ourselves and doing as Covey said to do, “seeking first to understand, then be understood,” is the first step to better, more effective communication.
Stephen Covey covers many other habits in this book, including another one of my favorites, “think win/win.” If you struggle with communication and want to get on the road to being a much more effective person, check out this and other books by this author.
