Do you often make jokes with friends or family about how “poor” you are? Or perhaps you aren’t making jokes. Maybe anytime someone asks you to do something, your response is, “I’m too poor for that.” Or perhaps you want to buy a nice outfit, shoes or go on vacation, but your response is “I’m too poor to do that.” Unfortunately, the more you say this, the more it starts to form your reality. It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy when you talk about how poor you are.
Why You Shouldn’t Say This Word
I remember reading “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” by Robert Kiyosaki many years ago. He talks about this extensively in his books how this mindset translates into life circumstances. For example, he mentioned that this word is a long-term situation, but “broke” is something temporary. So, essentially, it would be better to say “I’m broke” rather than “I’m poor” because the first implies something temporary. In contrast, the latter implies an ongoing condition. I will take it a step further and say try to eliminate both words from your vocabulary. Instead, it’s best to focus on what Kiyosaki said when he used the words “How can I afford it?” Instead of reflecting on your condition, whether it is long or short-term, it’s a better idea to find a way out of the condition, period.
Perhaps you can pursue a new career, reduce debts, or change spending habits to have more cash on hand. Whatever method you use to improve your finances, let’s try to remove such words from our vocabulary and look for more positive words to say. Instead of hearing the price of something and responding by saying, “I’m too broke to afford that” or “I could never have that kind of money,” think more positively. Instead, try to discover ways to get the thing if you want it. Perhaps you can get a second-hand version of a luxury purse you want. Or maybe you could rent one just to know what it feels like to carry a luxury purse. This can even apply to a car you like. Don’t just put an obstacle in the way. Instead, find a way to get what you want.
